The Full Summary:

From March 14–17, 2019, the Royal Commonwealth Society hosted its inaugural Asia Conference in Hong Kong, welcoming delegates from across the region and beyond. Representing RCS Edmonton were Major (Ret’d) Alexander Tsang CD, (former) Director of Casino Operations, and Ryan Jacques, (former) Director of Youth Affairs. The conference combined formal sessions, cultural exchange, and networking, creating an environment that encouraged collaboration, learning, and shared purpose.

The conference opened with a welcome dinner at the Hong Kong Zoroastrian Club, allowing delegates to connect in an informal setting. Formal sessions were held at St. John’s Cathedral, where speakers including the Canadian and Pakistani Consuls General explored the meaning and value of a connected Commonwealth.

Topics throughout the conference included youth education and skills development, sustainability, ocean protection, and intra-Commonwealth trade. RCS Edmonton contributed actively, with Ryan sharing youth perspectives during panel discussions and Alex presenting his experiences from military service, alongside artifacts and service medals that sparked meaningful dialogue.

Branch reports formed another key component of the conference, with Alex presenting on behalf of RCS Edmonton. His presentation highlighted Edmonton’s successful casino-based fundraising model and introduced the idea of Edmonton hosting a future international Commonwealth conference, (scheduled for September 10-13, 2026).

The conference also looked ahead, with a proposed digital initiative, CommonWealthSharing.com, aimed at fostering idea-sharing and collaboration among engaged citizens across Commonwealth nations.

The gathering concluded with a farewell lunch on Lamma Island, leaving delegates with lasting connections, fresh insights, and anticipation for future international RCS meetings.
