The Full Summary:
From October 15–18, 2018, the Royal Commonwealth Society hosted an International Meeting in London, welcoming delegates from RCS branches worldwide.
The conference provided an opportunity to share updates from RCS London, gather feedback from branches, and explore how the Society can remain relevant, inclusive, and impactful in a changing global landscape. The Edmonton Branch was represented by President Ian Havin, Vice President and Director of Public Relations Bernhard Baker, and (former) Director of Memberships Mary Cherniawski.
Across three days, discussions centred on youth engagement, intergenerational renewal, environmental challenges, and community outreach. Delegates heard from RCS leadership, Commonwealth officials, youth representatives, and regional coordinators, with sessions designed to encourage open dialogue and collaboration.
Panel discussions, breakout groups, and case studies allowed branches to exchange practical ideas on engaging young people, strengthening membership, and aligning local activities with broader Commonwealth priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The conference also featured several landmark moments, including the One People Oration delivered by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, at Westminster Abbey.
Events concluded with a special 150th Anniversary Reception at Lancaster House, hosted by Her Majesty’s Government and attended by senior officials and High Commissioners from across the Commonwealth.
Overall, the meeting was widely regarded as a success, fostering valuable connections, shared learning, and renewed enthusiasm for the Society’s mission, reinforcing the importance of continued participation by RCS Edmonton in future international gatherings.
