RCS Edmonton hosted an unforgettable event riding the historic streetcar across the High Level Bridge, connecting Edmonton’s transit heritage with community celebration. Passengers enjoyed a scenic journey that highlighted Edmonton’s rich transportation history and the volunteer spirit that keeps it alive.

Celebrating Innovation and Volunteerism

The Royal Commonwealth Society of Edmonton brought members and guests together for a unique heritage experience aboard the High Level Bridge streetcar, operated by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating Edmonton’s streetcar history.

Streetcar #930, originally built in Melbourne in 1947 and now part of Edmonton’s heritage fleet, was the historic vehicle that carried riders over the North Saskatchewan River with stunning views of the Edmonton River Valley from the High Level Bridge.

This event offered more than a ride, it connected participants to the evolution of transit in Edmonton, dating back to the original Edmonton Radial Railway that began service in 1908 and ran until 1951. As the streetcar rolled across the High Level Bridge, conversation flowed about community, history, and the way shared experiences like this help strengthen local bonds.

Guests appreciated learning about how volunteers restore and operate these historic vehicles, many of which came from around the world and now form Western Canada’s largest heritage streetcar fleet.

The scenic journey offered a reminder of Edmonton’s past and its vibrant present, celebrating innovation, volunteerism, and the many ways historic transit continues to bring people together. Whether riders were long-time enthusiasts or first-time visitors, the event underscored RCS Edmonton’s commitment to community engagement and cultural appreciation in our city.
